The Hebrew word mezuzah means doorpost. The mezuzah case should contain a rolled parchment scroll inscribed with the biblical passages Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and 11:13-21, which begins with The Shema -- the verse which declares our belief that there is only One God. The verses also remind us of the commandments to love and serve God with all of our heart, soul and might and teach His precepts to our children.
When a mezuzah is affixed to the doorpost, the following blessing is offered: "Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, Who has sanctified us by Your commandments and has commanded us to affix the mezuzah."
Having a mezuzah on your door, touching it and then touching your lips, will remind you to keep the word of God on your lips as you enter and leave your home.
