The Hebrew word mezuzah means doorpost.   The mezuzah case should contain a rolled parchment scroll inscribed with the biblical passage Deuteronomy 6:4-9, which contains The Shema, ie Shema Yisrael.  The verses declare our belief that there is only One God, the God of Israel, and remind us of the commandments to love and serve God with all of our heart, soul and might and teach His precepts to our children.

When a mezuzah is affixed to the doorpost, the following blessing is offered: "Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, Who has sanctified us by Your commandments and has commanded us to affix the mezuzah."
